Above, Rick McVicar performs his poem.

Text and video by Rick McVicar

A cold snap spreads its wings,

Its talons squeeze my toes.

I dance a Tennessee two-step through the snow

That crunches under my feet.

Sunbeams bounce off a white sheet

Blanketing a broken sidewalk.

I carefully watch where I put my feet

So I won’t take a sudden fall.

Cars travel fast despite wintry conditions

As if drivers are late to lie in their own graves.

. I take my time to tarry

So bells ringing for my demise

Will not sound their alarm

Interrupting noisy signs of life.
